Pepper sprays have
become very popular as a non lethal self defense weapon. Most people
who support using a pepper spray for self defense are generally not
aware of the real effects of pepper spray and how it actually
disables the attacker.

There are many ways a pepper spray disables an attacker. When pepper
spray comes in direct contact with the assailant the inhalation of
the spray will induce headache, dizziness, irritation, coughing,
choking, and nausea. Next he/she would immediately suffer from
shortness of breath due to the swelling that occurs in mucous
membranes. This causes the attacker to become incapacitated
temporarily.
When pepper spray comes in contact with skin it will result in a
burning sensation. The sensation is aggravated by rubbing the area.
Pepper spray will disable the attacker for 15-25 minutes without
causing permanent damage.
There are certain variables that would alter the speed of the
reaction time. These variables are:
-
Distance of
pepper spray.
-
The amount of
spray inhaled.
-
The duration of
the pepper spray on the attacker.
If you buy a pepper
spray, you must remember that most sprays expire within three to
four years from the day of manufacturing.
Accidental Effects:
In case pepper spray gets on you accidentally, you must:
-
Rinse the
affected area several times with cold water.
-
Wash your hands
several times.
-
Wash your clothes
separately.
At all times keep
it away from children.
